Frequently Asked Questions

What is the length of the school day?

The school day begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m.  The tardy bell rings at 7:45. Loading of buses begin at 2:20.

When can I park in the front drive?

The drive is open from 7:45 until 2:00 and again at approximately 2:35 for car traffic. 

What time can I drop off my child in the morning?

Students may be dropped off at door #5 on the west side of the building beginning at 7:30 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. After that time, they will need to enter the front door of the building, as they will be marked "tardy".

What will my 4th grader's day look like?

Students in 4th grade will enter the gym and wait for all buses to arrive. They will recite the Pledge of Allegiance together and then leave the gym with their class to begin their day. During the day, they will have a time for band, which meets separately from 5th grade band. Students not in band will participate in a Current Events class. There will be a 30 minute intervention time for all students and a 60 minute math block. Students will remain in their classroom for Reading/Language Arts and will move to one other classroom for either Social Studies or Science.  They will also have Art, Music or Physical Education once each day.

What will my 5th grader's day look like?

Students will enter the gym and wait for all buses to arrive. They will recite the Pledge of Allegiance together and then leave the gym with their class to begin their day. Students will have the opportunity to be in band and choir, which meets first thing in the morning. The students not going to band or choir that day will start their day with Current Events. Students will have a 30 minute intervention time and a 60 minute math block. Then, students will move from classroom to classroom with their class for the remaining subjects:  Social Studies, Science, Reading/Language Arts, Vocabulary, Technology and their Art, Music or Physical Education Class.

What is "Current Events"?

Students will explore age-appropriate news with their class with a teacher-led discussion. The Scholastic Weekly Reader, National Geographic for Kids and DOGO News will be the sources of the news for each day. There will not be a grade given for this class, however, participation and behavior will be reflected in the behavior and work habits portion of the report card.

Will there be an Honor Roll?

Yes. Students will be recognized for academic success each quarter. Students will receive a letter grade for Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, English, Physical Education, Music and Art. 4th grade will receive a Spelling grade and 5th grade will receive a Vocabulary grade. All grades will count evenly towards their grade point average. There will be one 4th grade Honor Roll and one 5th grade Honor Roll.

Can my 4th grader join Choir?

At this time choir is only offered to 5th grade students.

How can my child join band?

If your child did not join band during the spring sign-up, please send an email to our director, Mr. Adam Rusek at It is never too late to join!

What time will my child each lunch?

Lunch periods are 20 minutes in length with a 20 minute recess. The 4th grade lunch period is from 11:20 until 12:00 and the 5th grade lunch period is from 12:00 until 12:40. There will not be a snack time during the day so eating breakfast is very important.

Why isn't there a snack time?

Due to the increasing amount of food allergies, it is difficult to have food in the classrooms. Additionally, the schedule is very full during the day and there is not time to take a snack break.

How does the lunch program work at PIC?

Students have the opportunity to purchase a daily lunch at PIC. The food is prepared at PHS and brought out daily to our school. Students will order their lunch each morning in their classroom and will use an ID card that will be kept at school as they go through the lunch line to pay for their food. Parents can add funds to their child's lunch account online or they can send a check or cash to school with their child.

How can we celebrate my child's birthday at PIC?

Birthday are important; however, due to food allergies, birthday treats are not permitted. Students are welcome to celebrate their birthday by bringing in small items such as pencils or bookmarks. Other suggestions are to donate an item to the classroom in honor of your child's birthday or send in something for the class to sign (t-shirt, stuffed animal, memory book, etc.) for your child. Students will be recognized at school on their birthday.

What Intramural sports will be offered at PIC?

The intramural sports being offered this year are: Flag Football in the fall, Floor Hockey in the winter and Volleyball in the spring. All sports are co-ed. There is a $20 fee for each sport. The season will be 5 weeks in length and each team will meet twice a week after school. Students participating in Intramurals must have a current sports physical on file with the nurse.

Are there any IESA sports that are offered?

Students in 5th grade are able to join Cross Country, Wrestling and Track at Peotone Junior High. Students will be able to take the bus from PIC to PJHS after school for these sports. All students must have a sports physical on file to be able to participate. Please see the PJHS website for more information regarding seasons.

How do I pick my child up from school during the day?

Please send a note to inform us that you will be picking your child up from school. If you are picking up your child between the hours of 8:00 and 2:00, you are welcome to park in the drive, leaving the area directly in front of the porch open for a fire lane, come in to the school office and sign your child out. The student will be called from their classroom at that time.

How do I pick my child up after school?

If you plan to pick your child up on a regular basis (every day, every Monday, every Tuesday and Thursday, etc.) you may stop in to the school office to complete a form in which you state the authorized drivers; you will receive two car tags: one for your car and another for a second car (spouse or other authorized driver). The tag must be visible on the passenger side visor for you to use this service. Parents must wait until the buses depart - approximately 2:35 before the front entrance is opened to car traffic. Enter from the east end of the front drive, pull forward to the pickup zone and your child will be sent out to you. Please do not get out of your car.

What if my child is sick?

Please call the school office by 9:00 a.m. to notify us that your child will not be at school. If leaving a message, please state the child's name, the teacher's name and the specific reason for absence. If you wish to pick up homework, please let us know the time you wish to pick it up. Homework is available for parent pick up after 12:00.

Other than Intramurals, will there be other after-school activities?

At this time, we are planning a drama group that will begin meeting in January. Watch for more information to follow. Information regarding Chess Club will be coming home is September.
